On To Game 7, We Go. No, Seriously.

What do Ray Lumpp, Bison Dele, Rasheed Wallace, and Jayson Tatum have in common? They’ve all played on a team that erased a 3-0 series deficit in the NBA Playoffs. But Tatum—along with the rest of the 2023 Celtics—wants to become the first of the four teams to finish the job and win the series. If you’re wondering how we got here, we honestly have no idea. The entire fourth quarter of Game 6 was a blur. But we’ll do our best to regale the important details.

The first half belonged to Jayson Tatum (25 PTS, 7/13 FG, 11/11 FT) who was getting anywhere he wanted to on the court.

Caleb Martin and Gabe Vincent—who continue to be spectacular in the playoffs—kept Miami afloat in the first half, who definitely lead the playoffs in the number of times they make you say, "How are they only down by that many points?” With Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo shooting 4/17 in the first half, Miami only being down four at the half felt like a victory.

Fast forward to the fourth quarter, where we witnessed:

  • A common Jimmy Butler fourth-quarter takeover (15 PTS) including a tough three.

  • A challenge from Boston that actually cost them a point but may have saved them the game because it caused an extra 0.9 seconds to be put back on the clock, leading to…

  • One of the craziest buzzer-beaters we can remember. Derrick White, have a moment.

Adrian Griffin, Milwaukee Bucks Head Coach

A new era has dawned in Milwaukee. After parting ways with Mike Budenholzer earlier this month, the Bucks have already tabbed their new leader: Adrian Griffin, who was most recently the top assistant on Nick Nurse’s staff in Toronto, where he helped the Raptors capture their first-ever NBA championship in 2019. Griffin actually started his coaching career in Milwaukee, where he coached from 2008-10. Now he returns as the head coach of a team with 2X MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and an expectation to compete for a title for years to come.

Unsung Game 7 Legends

It’s time for the two best words in sports. No, not “Enjoy Basketball,” but that’s a close second, thanks! Of course, we mean “Game 7.” So, for a slightly different version of Unsung Heroes, we’re looking backward at some of the best Game 7 performances in Boston and Miami history. Who stepped up when it mattered most?

Celtics: Paul Pierce, 2008 East 2R vs. Cleveland: 41 PTS, 13/23 FG, 4/6 3PT

This game already being 15 years old has sent us spiraling into an existential crisis...nonetheless, The Truth vs. a young King James in 2008 remains one of the most exhilarating duels of the 21st century. Of course, Pierce and Boston got the last laugh, eventually winning the whole dang thing. The shotmaking between these two was just silly.

Heat: Tim Hardaway, 1997 East 2R vs. New York: 38 PTS, 7 AST, 5 STL, 12/20 FG

It’s always a good time to remind the people that Tim Hardaway was a menace. The 5X All-NBA point guard had his full bag on display in Game 7 against the Knicks in the second round of the 1997 Playoffs. So, so crafty.
