Weekend Playoff Wrap-Up

Warriors hold Rockets under 90 PTS, win Game 7 103-89

Experience wins in the postseason, and Sunday was a prime example.

After dropping Games 5 and 6 to Houston, the Warriors avoided a blown 3-1 lead with a stout defensive performance in Game 7 to send the Rockets home. In a clash between the young guns and the old guard, Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler delivered a suffocating effort, holding H-Town to 40% from the field and earning a second round date with Minnesota. Golden State was led on offense by its duo of lethal three-point shooters, with Curry notching 14 PTS in the fourth quarter and Buddy Hield playing hero with 33 PTS and nine three-pointers.

It was a great season for Houston, who played ahead of their timeline to earn the West’s second seed. But they got an unlucky matchup with the new-look Dubs, who have been one of the league’s best teams since acquiring Jimmy and will give any squad in the bracket a run. What a series!

Nuggets’ all-around effort leads to 120-101 Game 7 win over Clippers

In a win or go home scenario, Denver didn’t even pack their bags.

On Saturday night, the Nuggets poured in a dominant effort in Game 7 over the Clippers, bringing the first round’s most consistently exciting series to a quiet end. Denver led by as many as 35 PTS and had six players score 15 or more (including a big-time 21 PTS from Christian Braun), sending the Nugs through to the second round and handing L.A. an early exit.

Heading into this series, the Clippers were the hottest team in the NBA after winning 18 of their last 21, and Denver seemed to be in flux after firing their head coach and GM just days before the postseason. But anything can happen in the playoffs, and the Nuggets emerged victorious after a pair of nail-biting wins in Games 1 and 4 and convincing victories in Games 5 and 7. Next up, the top-seeded Thunder!

Indiana steals Game 1 from Cavs with 121-112 win

The Cavs had one of the most dominant showings in league history in the first round—so far, it appears they’ve met their match in the second.

In the first conference semifinal face-off, Indiana knocked off top-seeded Cleveland behind the same sort of balanced scoring attack that helped them dispatch Milwaukee. Six Pacers scored in double figures, led by Andrew Nembhard (23 PTS, 6 AST) and Tyrese Haliburton (22 PTS, 13 AST), while Donovan Mitchell led the way for Cleveland with 33 PTS. By the way, that’s Spida’s eighth-straight Game 1 with 30+ points, breaking a tie with MJ for the longest such streak in league history.

After trailing early, Cleveland battled back to take a 102-101 lead with 7:05 to go in the fourth, but a string of Pacers threes gave Indiana a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. We can’t wait for Game 2!

Gregg Popovich announces coaching retirement, will stay on with Spurs in front office

After 29 years, five championships, and the most coaching wins in NBA history, Gregg Popovich is calling it a career.

On Friday, Pop stepped down as head coach of the Spurs, marking the end of a legendary run as San Antonio’s HC. He’ll stay in the Spurs organization as the team’s President of Basketball Operations, helping to oversee San Antonio’s next era of excellence. The team is promoting Mitch Johnson, a longtime assistant who served as the Spurs’ interim leader for much of 2024-25, to head coach.

Since first hiring himself as head coach (yes, Pop was the Spurs’ GM in 1996 and appointed himself HC), Popovich has left a legacy unrivaled by almost anyone else in professional sports. Coaching legends like Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Kawhi Leonard, Pop led the Spurs to five championships between 1999 and 2014 as well as 22 consecutive playoff appearances. His Spurs played tough defense, passed up good shots for great shots, and showed up night in and night out, making them one of the league’s most consistently great teams for literal decades.

It will be a long time before another coach surpasses Popovich’s league-record 1,422 wins. But it will be even longer before his legacy is forgotten, because no matter what, it never will be.
