Full-Court Coverage

  • Down by 18 in the 4Q on the wrong end of a Giannis masterclass, the LeBron-less Lakers did the impossible and gave us one of the best regular season games weā€™ve seen in a long time. Dā€™Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves came through with some excellent guard play down the stretch (including an AR dagger in 2OT) but this W had Anthony Davisā€™ fingerprints all over it. The All-NBA big man was a major reason why the Lakers forced OT and ended up with the 128-124 win in this one, as he dominated the paint with 23 boards and four blocks, including this game-saving rejection on Dame at the end of OT:

  • Down in New Orleans, the Pelicans were looking to write their own comeback story after being down 20 midway through the third against OKC. Led by yet another Zion scoring clinic, the Pels brought it all the way back to take a five-point leadā€¦ before the Thunder clamped up and secured the seven-point win.

  • The Mavericks have looked downright scary since the trade deadline. Dallas dominated the paint on defense and rained in threes with impunity to send the Kings home in a 132-96 beatdown.

  • Are you without your star player? Are you down by 30 to the best team in the league? Thatā€™s exactly the type of seemingly hopeless situation the Hawks found themselves in on Monday against a red-hot Celtics squad. But instead of giving up and unleashing the bench mob, Dejounte Murray started diming like prime Chris Paul, the entire roster got scorchingly hot from three, and Deā€™Andre Hunter drilled what might be the most ill-advised shot of all-time to complete the 5th largest comeback in NBA history. Pure cinema:

  • Be on the lookout, because Domantas ā€œSince Wiltā€ Sabonis is at it again. The Kingsā€™ star center made it 54 straight double-doubles with a crisp 11-13-10 during Sacramentoā€™s 108-96 Monday night W over the Sixers. Thatā€™s the longest streak by any player since the 1976-77 mergerā€”only 173 to go to catch Wilt!

  • You know you were balling when the opposing coach gets salty about it after the game šŸ˜‚. Donte DiVincenzo dropped a new career-high with 40 points in the Knicksā€™ blowout of the Pistons on Monday, including a franchise-record 11 threes. Shout-out to Josh Hart for backing up his Villanova bro as well.

  • Jeremy Sochan may have been 0 for his last 14 from beyond the arc, but with the wise words of Dion Waiters ringing in his head, he buried a go-ahead triple over the Suns to give the Spurs one of their most impressive wins of the year:

šŸ§  Daily Trivia šŸ§

Donte DiVincenzo attempted 20 threes during his record-setting night. Who was the first player in NBA history to shoot that many in a single game?

Playoff Sleepers: Orlando Magic

As Jimmy Buckets and the Heat have shown us in recent years, underestimating underdogs is a dangerous game. And thatā€™s why weā€™re looking at our favorite Eastern Conference playoff sleeper today: the Orlando Magic.

The Magic low-key sneaking into our ECF prediction like:

What We Like āœ…

With the best defensive rating in the Eastern Conference, opposing offenses should be TERRIFIED of a first-round matchup against Orlando. The Magic particularly excel at forcing turnovers (#2 in OPP TOV%) and defending the perimeter (#4 in OPP 3PT Per 100 Poss), thanks to dawgs like Jalen Suggs and Jonathan Isaac.

One thing that really matters come playoff time is getting extra possessions whenever and wherever you can, and Orlando is one of the few teams that (1) gets tons of second-chance looks on the boards and (2) stops their opponents from doing the same with ease. Theyā€™re one of just three teams who are top-ten in offensive and defensive rebounding percentage.

And lastly, prepare to be in some serious foul trouble if you play the Magic. Theyā€™re first in the league in opponent fouls per 100 possessions AND free throw attempts per 100 possessions

Areas of Concern šŸšØ

As much as the Magic know how to take the rock away from other teams, they give it back just as much. Orlando turns the ball over at a higher rate than any other playoff team, and they could be in serious trouble if they match up against another aggressive defense.

And while Orlando has a pair of elite scorers in Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, they struggle to find balance on the offensive end. Ranking last in three-pointers made per game, they rely heavily on being able to get in the paint to score, which wonā€™t work against some of the bigger and stronger teams out there.

A Potential Playoff Run?

First round matchup: If the Magic want to advance, their most favorable first round matchup is probably the Pacers. Indy has an awesome offense, no doubt, but they struggle to defend inside and they foul more than any other team in basketball. Orlando is 12-4 in games where they shoot 30+ free throws, including two wins against Tyrese Haliburton and Co.

Second round matchup: Assuming the best teams advance, the Magic would most likely match up against either Milwaukee or Bostonā€¦ and letā€™s just say nobody wants to play the team with the second-best net rating of all time. The Bucks present some challenges for the Magic, like having to score on Giannis and Brook Lopez, but Milwaukee and Orlando split their season series and the Magic won the offensive rebounding and turnover battles in both games.

Who do you think is the most favorable first round matchup for the Magic?
