🏀 Is he CP3 reincarnated?

Plus, Detroit was *this* close…

Instructions on how to make one Tyrese Haliburton: add two tons of assists, hold the turnovers, and sprinkle some childlike appreciation for WWE legends. Allow us to explain…

Last Night’s Action

Haliburton dishes out historic night in win over Bulls

Last night Tyrese Haliburton dropped 20 assists and ZERO turnovers in a 120-104 win over Chicago. That is not normal—not even close to normal. ‘Rese becomes the 5th player to record a 20-assist, zero-turnover game and joins “Point God” Chris Paul as the only maestros to do so in the past 40 years!

Pistons almost beat Celtics, instead handed 28th straight loss

Turns out we didn’t need the In-Season Tournament for excitement purposes; a historic losing streak had this regular season game felt like Game 7 of the NBA Finals! The script writers were cruel having the lowly Pistons up 21 on the almighty Celtics, just to have them lose 128-122 in a tight overtime and extend their losing streak to 28—tied for the longest ever. 😭

Jokic joins Wilt in history as Nuggets dismantle Ja-less Grizzlies

Apparently, Memphis is unbeatable with Ja Morant and very beatable without him, as the Nuggets battered the Grizzlies 142-105. But more importantly, Nikola Jokic dropped a 26-point triple-double on 11/11 from the field, joining Wilt Chamberlain as the only players in NBA history with multiple 100% FG triple-doubles 🤯

Elsewhere

  • Victor Wembanyama gave us an absolute show last night with 30 points and SEVEN blocks in a 118-105 win over the Blazers.

  • A late New Orleans surge led by Brandon Ingram (26 PTS) ultimately produced a 112-105 win over the Jazz. Trey Murphy III only hit two shots all night, but they were two dagger three-pointers to put the game away—that’s why shooters shoot!

  • The Heat handled the Warriors 114-102 as Tyler Herro poured in 26 points and Jamal Cain (18 PTS) is the newest random dude Miami is molding into a stud. Meanwhile, Steph and the Warriors were colder than the other side of the pillow (like, in a bad way).

  • Anthony Edwards poured in a season-high 44 points as the Timberwolves won 118-110 against a Mavs squad that lacked scoring with Luka and Kyrie sidelined.

Wednesday Night Notes

And let’s quickly give you the gist from Wednesday’s hoops:

  • Who said Kevin Durant is just a scorer? In a victory over the Rockets, KD posted a triple double and tied his career high with 16 assists! Shoutout to Eric Gordon (7-11 3PT) who was scorching hot too! 🔥

  • How were 11 players selected before Jalen Williams in the 2022 Draft? On Wednesday night Williams posted a career-high 36 points in dominant fashion in the 129-120 win over the Knicks. Fellow Thunder Tre Mann was hyped (about name puns)

  • Luka Doncic (39 PTS) was laughably good especially in the first half, but a Jarrett Allen 20/20 game and a fourth quarter offensive explosion from microwave Caris LeVert (29 PTS) helped the Cavs overcome a 20-point deficit to beat the Mavs!

  • After sending the Pistons into infamy on Tuesday night, Brooklyn rested nearly their entire starting five, paving the way for Giannis (32 PTS) and Khris Middleton (27 PTS, 10 AST) to break away in the 4th quarter for a 144-122 win.

Player of the Week: Luka Doncic

We often try to make our Players of the Week someone rising to the occasion, but sometimes it's best not to overthink things: Luka Doncic was the best player in the world this week.

Across three games in the past seven days (he missed last night with a quad injury), Doncic averaged 42.7 points, 10.3 assists, and 8.3 rebounds per game. Sheesh. He even got after it defensively, posting 2.2 steals and 2 blocks per game!

The capstone came on Christmas when Santa brought Luka a special present: a majority stake as owner of the Suns. In a Christmas Day masterclass against Phoenix, Luka became just the 2nd player in NBA history to drop 50+ points and 15+ assists in a single game. Click here for a great in-depth analysis of exactly how Luka tore apart Phoenix’s defensive coverages.

Doncic is probably the best one-man offensive machine in basketball right now. His ability to carry a heavy isolation load efficiently and pick apart double teams with lethal passing has him making video game 🎮 numbers look normal on a nightly basis. Hats off to Luka Magic 🪄

What We’re Enjoying

The Real MVP: It’s no secret Nikola Jokic isn’t one for drama— or media at all, for that matter. But he just hopped on a 30 minute interview with teammate Michael Porter Jr and the result was the realest convo with The Joker we’ve heard to date. If you want to see Jokic be truly himself, take a look ⬇️
