Game Recaps

76ers hold off Celtics on final possession, sneak away with 102-100 win

We’re only three weeks into the season, and Philly and Boston already played their third matchup against each other on Tuesday night. That may sound crazy, but you know what’s even crazier? The Sixers’ two point win last night was the largest margin of victory so far between these two squads. That’s just how evenly matched these battles have been…. 😳

In the first two matchups this season, it was Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe taking care of business on the Philly side. Last night though, the City of Brotherly Love witnessed an unexpected breakout performance. Justin Edwards came up HUGE, leading the Sixers in scoring with 22 points on a crazy efficient shooting night (8/9 FG, 5/6 3PT) including three straight triples down the stretch in the fourth. 🔥

Down by two and a chance to win on the final possession, Derrick White (19 PTS) lost control of the ball and forced up a prayer from near halfcourt that didn’t fall. It was an overall rough shooting night for the C’s as a whole, going just 39% from the floor. Jaylen Brown (24 PTS) and Anfernee Simons (17 PTS) led the way for Boston alongside White, but in the end, when Justin Edwards is on a heater like that, there’s simply not much you can do. 😎

Wiggins’ Buzzer-Beating Dunk fuels Heat past Cavs 140-138 in OT

Monday night was already a WILD one in the association before this game concluded. The Cavs and Heat, though, felt this NBA sundae needed a cherry on top. 🍒

After getting swept by the Cavs in the first round of the playoffs last spring, the Heat came out with something to prove. Norman Powell (33 PTS) continued his blistering start to his Miami career, and Jaime Jaquez Jr (28 PTS) made one clutch bucket after another to bring this one into overtime.

It appeared this game was heading for a second overtime, after Donovan Mitchell (28 PTS, 15 REB, 8 AST) hit a ridiculous game-tying trey in the corner as he was fading out of bounds.

Unfortunately for Spida, his shot left just enough time for Erik Spoelstra and his coaching staff to draw up this beautiful play design to free up Wiggins for the game-winning slam:

Miami got the job done in this one without Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, improving to an impressive 5-0 start at home this season. Heat Culture appears to be back, baby! 🙌

Elsewhere around the NBA:

  • Grass is green, folks. The Thunder won….again. OKC notches their 11th win in 12 games to open their title-defending season with a 126-102 route of the Golden State Warriors. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored as many points (28) as minutes played, and Chet Holmgren was his usual self (23 PTS, 11 REBS). Although he didn’t have a great shooting night (4/13 FG), it was great to see Stephen Curry back out on the floor after missing the past few games with an illness.

  • If you’re looking for evidence that homecourt advantage still matters, look no further than the New York Knicks, who improved to 7-0 at home this season following their 133-120 win over the Grizzlies. Memphis simply had no answer for Jalen Brunson (32 PTS, 11 AST), or the entire Knicks starting lineup for that matter, as all five starters scored in double figures in this one!

  • Monday night saw not one, but two buzzer-beaters in the state of Florida! Desmond Bane (22 PTS, 7 AST) cashed a 27-foot fading three as time expired to lift the Magic over the Blazers 115-112, a win that Orlando desperately needed after their somewhat inconsistent start to the season. Paolo Banchero (28 PTS, 9 REBS) was up to his usual bag of tricks, and helped Orlando stave off a late 11-0 Portland run led by Shaedon Sharpe (31 PTS) and Deni Avdija (27 PTS).

  • After already covering two buzzer-beating finishes on Monday, you won’t believe what happened in the Pistons 137-135 OT victory against the Wizards….that’s right, another buzzer-beater. Daniss Jenkins (24 PTS) was the hero for the Motor City, sinking a clutch three-pointer at the buzzer in the corner to force OT. From there, Cade Cunningham willed Detroit to the W, putting up an insane 46 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, and five steal statline. The Pistons took home their seventh consecutive win and remain atop of the Eastern Conference. 🔥

Mavericks fire General Manager Nico Harrison

Christmas day isn’t for another six weeks, but if you ask the majority of Dallas Mavericks fans, they’ll probably tell you Santa came early this year after the news of Nico Harrison’s firing dropped Tuesday Morning…

After Harrison stunned the basketball world back in February by trading their superstar Luka Doncić to the Lakers after he led the Mavs all the way to the Finals one season prior, the passionate fans of Dallas placed their anger and confusion directly onto him, shouting from the rooftop that he should be let go of his duties. Well, that day has finally come.

As if the Luka trade wasn’t tough enough for fans to endure, it certainly hasn’t helped that Dallas (3-8) is off to an extremely slow start to its first full season post-Luka. With Luka, and now Nico, both gone, this week marks the true beginning of a new era in Dallas. Cooper Flagg, the floor is officially yours!
