All-Star Weekend Wrap-Up

Shaq’s OGs defeat Chuck’s Global Stars 41-25 in All-Star Tourney final

Maybe our parents were right—the OGs really do know best.

In the opening round of the NBA’s new four-team All-Star mini-tournament, Shaq’s OGs (led by Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and James Harden and cheered on by an injured LeBron James) dispatched Team C, a squad from the Rising Stars challenge—more on them in a second. On the other side of the bracket, Team Chuck (primarily featuring international stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, and Victor Wembanyama) downed Team Kenny, overcoming 6 PTS each from Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Tyler Herro.

Then, in the championship, the duo of Curry and Jayson Tatum dominated for the OGs, combining for 27 PTS as Shaq’s squad raced to a 16-point victory. Curry took home the MVP award, with four triples in the final including one from near half court.

No matter the format, it’s always Enjoy-able to see the best in the world get together and hoop. Especially when they’re hitting shots like this: ⬇️

Team C wins Rising Stars, Stephon Castle takes home MVP

The league’s new format also applied to the Rising Stars tournament, where four teams faced off for the chance to advance to Sunday’s All-Star Game. The final was a face-off between Team C, led by Stephon Castle, Dalton Knecht, and Jaylen Wells, and Team G League, starring JD Davison, Leonard Miller, and Reed Sheppard.

Castle, the current ROTY favorite, was the star of the event, scoring 6 PTS in the semi and 12 of his team’s 25 PTS in the final. He led Team C to a decisive 25-14 victory and a berth into last night’s All-Star tournament—rising star is right! 🌟

Contest Craziness

In addition to the new All-Star game format, the weekend brought back a few tried and true favorites on Saturday night. Let’s break down the winners and biggest moments.

Mac Attack: McClung wins third straight dunk contest title

Fellow Mac McClung high school mixtape fans, rejoice: the boy with bounce is still the league’s #1 dunker.

On Saturday, McClung—a G Leaguer for the Magic—won his third straight dunk contest with arguably his best performance yet, receiving perfect 50s on all four of his slams en route to an unforgettable victory. McClung started the night with an homage to former Dunk Contest champ Blake Griffin, skying over a car for a ludicrous jam, and his performance only rose from there.

Spurs rookie Stephon Castle gave McClung a run for his money in the finals, whipping out a 50 of his own on a wicked East Bay. But McClung’s performance was too much to overcome, giving him another contest title and cementing his place as an All-Star Weekend legend.

I Need a Herro: Tyler Herro brings home three-point crown

First All-Star appearance? Check. First Three-Point Contest win? Check. Unlimited swag? Check.

Tyler Herro brought it all to All-Star Weekend, including a lethal jumper that led him to a victory in this year’s Three-Point Contest. After Buddy Hield paced the field with 31 PTS in the first round, Herro dialed in for the finals, swishing both Starry balls and racking up 24 PTS off the bat to put “pressure” on his competitors. And in the end, Hield and Darius Garland (who wore his father Winston’s jersey) were unable to keep pace and gave Herro the crown.

After being drafted out of Kentucky and torching the Celtics in the ECF as a rookie, Herro has been a household name for some time. But now, he’s truly taken the leap to all-around star, with a dub on All-Star Saturday only increasing his profile. Go off, Tyler! 🤩

Cavs bring home Skills Contest victory, Spurs disqualified

All-Star Weekend is about having fun. And, for some of the world’s biggest competitors, doing whatever it takes to win.

In the first event of Saturday night, Cleveland’s duo of Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley brought home the Skills Contest title, defeating the Warriors’ tandem of Draymond Green and Moses Moody in the final round after the Dubs posted the fastest first round time. But the contest also saw some… creative execution, with Wemby and Chris Paul being disqualified after attempting to bend the rules by flubbing their jumper attempts in order to quickly move throughout the course.

CP3 has long been known to maximize every potential advantage, but Wemby says that this trick was actually his idea. Perhaps the master is rubbing off on the young star!
