Today’s Lineup

These Finals Are Fun: Miami steals a thriller in Denver and evens the series 🪢

Back To Miami We Go, Series Tied 1-1

You cannot kill the Miami Heat.

We’ll walk you through the vibe of this Game 2 of the NBA Finals via GIFs. After the first quarter, when Max Strus found his jumpshot and Miami looked more comfortable than they did all of Game 1:

Heat up 3 after 1Q

Then, Denver came alive, mounting a massive second-quarter run—a lot of which came with Nikola Jokic on the bench. Halftime mood:

Nuggets up six at the break

In the third quarter, you could hear the think pieces being composed. “Will Miami win a game this series?” Or perhaps, “Miami’s magic has finally run out.” That’s because Denver slowly started to inch away, building a lead that ballooned to nine heading into the final frame. Mood after three:

But that dancing (respect to Jamal Murray for the double hammers there) didn’t last long, because Miami runs on Duncan…Robinson, that is. The Heat sharpshooter was a non-factor for three quarters and then was the factor to start the fourth.

No disrespect to the first seven quarters of this series, but it felt like the Finals really started in the fourth quarter of Game 2 on Sunday.

Just like Denver did in the third, Miami slowly gained more and more breathing room—taking a 107-95 lead with 3:39 left. Denver’s furious comeback fell just short—literally—as a Jamal Murray prayer to tie the game in the waning seconds missed. Phew.

Can we start Game 3, like, now?

Frank Vogel —> Phoenix

Getting to live in sunny Arizona while coaching both Kevin Durant and Devin Booker? Yeah, we can’t blame Frank Vogel for taking the Suns’ head coaching position.

Vogel most recently spent three years as head coach of the Lakers, where he won an NBA title in 2020. In a world where coaches are hired and fired quicker than ever before, it’s still pretty wild to see a coach go from championship, to unemployed, to coaching a new team in just three years.

How do you feel about Phoenix hiring Frank Vogel?

EB Roundtable

It’s been a minute since we circled the EB roundtable and let all you intelligent folks lead the discussions. For this week’s edition, we imagined a hypothetical 3 on 3 tournament. If the in-season tournament doesn’t work out for the NBA, someone let Adam Silver know we have a good replacement…

It’s hard to go wrong here, in all honesty. Let’s check out some of the most fun hypotheticals.

James Harden has been a star for so long that memories of him coming off the bench feel like they’re from a different lifetime. This team basically speaks for itself. It also gives us an opportunity to go watch some Hakeem highlights, which is always a good idea.

It’s also always a good idea to remind folks just how nasty Lamar Odom was. No one quite exemplifies “ahead of their time” better than Odom, who was a prototypical 2023 NBA player in the early 2000s. A perfect 3-on-3 player.

Three different generations of NBA players and three distinct play styles that might come together and create the most entertaining 3-on-3 team the blacktop has ever seen.

Frozen Moments

What We’re Enjoying

Spiderman: Across The Spider-verse: How do you follow up on one of the best movies—animated or not—of the past decade? Well, make a sequel that somehow takes all the greatest parts of that movie and makes them even better, apparently. Across The Spider-Verse somehow exceeds the energy and excitement of its predecessor. Go see this movie ASAP. Regardless if you like superhero movies or not. It’s so good.
