Weekend Wrap-Up

Luka drops first 30-bomb as a Laker, leads L.A. to rare 123-100 win in Denver

For everyone out there who forgot who Luka Doncic is, allow him to reintroduce himself.

In his fourth game in the purple and gold, Luka reminded the world why his trade was such a surprise. After three relatively quiet outings, Doncic finally returned to form with 32 PTS, 10 REB, and 7 AST to lead L.A. to a blowout win over Denver. It was Luka’s first 30-point (and 20-point) game as a Laker, snapping the Nuggets’ nine-game win streak while giving L.A. its first regular season win in the Mile High City since April 2022.

LeBron described Luka as “super dialed in” heading into the matchup, but the rest of the Lakers also had their fair share of fun. Bron added 25 PTS while Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura combined for 44 PTS to give L.A. something to build on heading into the home stretch of the season.

Shai drops 37, outduels Ant as Thunder beat Wolves 130-123

The Western Conference is exploding with young stars, and two of the brightest went at it on Sunday night as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder took on Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves. In a shootout that saw both squads shoot over 40% from three and both stars score 29+, it was OKC who got the last laugh with Shai’s 37 PTS ultimately lighting the path to a dub.

This game was a lot like a heavyweight boxing match, with each team trading blows and winning rounds. After OKC opened up a 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Wolves battled back with a 19-2 run (that included this sweet stepback triple from Ant) to take the lead heading into the half. But in the end, it was the West’s best who came out on top, winning the third quarter and holding on in the fourth to earn win #45 on the season.

While OKC seems to have the top seed locked up, the T-Wolves currently sit at 31-26 and remain in a tight fight for the last few playoff spots in the West. But the real story of a game like this is seeing two of the league’s icons trade buckets—what could be more Enjoyable than that?

Elsewhere around the NBA…

  • “Don’t touch me— I’m sizzlin’.” Those were the words of Cade Cunningham after his ridiculous performance of 38 PTS, 12 AST, and 7 REB that led Detroit to a 148-143 win over Atlanta. The phrase also applies to the Pistons themselves, who’ve won six games in a row to take a three-game lead in the race for the East’s 6th seed.

  • Contrary to popular belief, Dallas’ basketball franchise was not wiped off the face of the Earth when Luka Doncic was traded. In fact, despite an injury to Anthony Davis, the Mavs have remained solid since dealing their young superstar. Their latest win came on Friday night, with Kyrie Irving pouring in 35 PTS in a 111-103 win over New Orleans (the next night, NOLA’s Zion Williamson also became the fastest player to 2,000 points since Michael Jordan.) But on Sunday, Dallas’s win streak came to an end at the hands of Golden State, with Steph Curry dropping 30 PTS to lead the Dubs to a 126-102 win in a battle of former Splash Brothers (plus, shoutout to Andre Iguodala for his jersey retirement!)

  • If you had to choose right now, who’s coming out of the Eastern Conference? Is it the Boston Celtics, the reigning NBA champs who are on pace for 59 wins and just handed the Knicks a 118-105 L behind a near-triple-double (25 PTS, 10 REB, 9 AST) from Jayson Tatum? Is it the Cleveland Cavaliers, who remain on a 68-win pace and earned weekend wins over the Knicks and Grizzlies? Or is it another contender like the Milwaukee Bucks, who have (a) championship experience, (b) arguably the conference’s best individual player in Giannis Antetokounmpo, and (c) also went 2-0 over the weekend? No matter what, we can’t wait for the playoffs… 🍿

Record Retrospective

Before the unfortunate news that he’d be sidelined the rest of the season with a blood clot in his shoulder, Victor Wembanyama was averaging 3.8 blocks per game—a figure that would have been the highest since 1999. But the most prolific shot-blocking season in NBA history took place before then, in 1985.

Mark Eaton was never supposed to be an NBA basketball player. After coming off the bench for his high school basketball team, Eaton graduated and began working at an auto mechanic before being discovered by Tom Lubin, an assistant basketball coach at Cypress Community College. Eaton later enrolled at Cypress and played there for two years before transferring to UCLA and graduating in 1982. Eaton was still raw as a professional prospect, having averaged just 3.7 minutes per game as a senior, but his potential as a rim protector at 7’4” led the Jazz to select him 72nd overall in the 1982 Draft (there were 10 rounds back then).

Eaton made an immediate impact as a rookie, finishing third in the league with 3.4 BPG. He continued developing his basketball fundamentals during his time in the NBA, but eventually, his height and skill intersected for one of the most dominant defensive campaigns in league history. In 1985, Eaton shattered the NBA record for both blocks per game and total blocks in a season, swatting 456 shots for an average of 5.56 per game. Eaton took home ‘84-’85 Defensive Player of the Year and became the first player to record double-digit blocks in a playoff game, with 10 rejections in a postseason game against the Rockets.

Eaton was named an All-Star and won another DPOY in 1989, and although a series of knee and back injuries ultimately forced him to retire in 1994, he leaves a larger than life legacy—especially with the players who tried to score against him.
