LaMelo, Hornets stun Knicks 115-98 in midst of tight Eastern Conference seeding battle

With the fourth-ranked Pacers surging their way into three straight wins, this is surely a game the third-ranked Knicksā€”who only sit a couple games ahead of Indianaā€”had hoped to win. Unfortunately, they forgot about one guy: the man, the myth, LaMelo.

Ball (25 PTS, 8 AST, 5-10 3PT) and the Hornets went virtually wire-to-wire against a Knicks team that was without Jalen Brunson due to his ankle injury, but it wasnā€™t just LaMelo contributing to this surprise win as DaQuan Jeffries (14 PTS) and Nick Smith Jr. (13 PTS) both hit a couple threes that kept Charlotte going down the stretch. OG Anunoby (25 PTS) and KAT (24 PTS, 10 REB) kept the Knicksā€™ offense going at a respectable pace, but it wasnā€™t enough in Charlotte last night.

Hey, college basketballā€”the NBA can have big upsets in March, too!

Cadeā€™s game-winning three lifts Pistons over Miami 116-113

On Wednesday against the Heat, Cade Cunningham (25 PTS, 11 AST, 12 REB) faced the situation we all used to face in our driveways after school. The game was tied, the (imaginary) clock was winding down, and the ball was in our hands at the three-point line. Well, Cadeā€™s hands.

And when Cunningham faced this situation, he drilled the bank-shot three to hand the Pistons the win, their 39th on the season. If the season ended today, that would be their highest win total since 2019ā€”lucky for Pistons fans, thereā€™s still a little season left.

Elsewhere around the NBAā€¦

  • Have a day, Sandro Mamukelashvili (34 PTS, 9 REB)! In just 19 minutes played, Mamu put the Spurs on his backā€”with a little help from Stephon Castle (22 PTS)ā€”and carried San Antonio to a 120-105 win over the Knicks. Thatā€™s the highest-scoring game by a player with less than 20 MP in NBA history!

  • 27 PTS from DeMar DeRozan led a well-rounded Kings attack that ultimately beat Evan Mobley (31 PTS, 10 REB) and the Cavs 123-119. Three straight Ls for Cleveland after a 16-game winning streakā€”oh, how the tables turn!

  • A big night from Devin Booker (41 PTS, 7 AST, 6-12 3PT) powered the Suns over the Bulls, who had won five of their last six games, in a 127-121 PHX win. Nikola Vucevic and Coby White led Chicago in scoring with 24 PTS apiece.

  • After Indiana led for their entire game against Dallas on Wednesday, the Mavs got hot at just the right time and jumped out to an 11-point lead in the 4Qā€¦ until Bennedict Mathurin (23 PTS, 7 REB) got hot and helped Indy regain the lead, securing the 135-131 home win. Then, the Pacers escaped with a 105-99 OT win over Brooklyn last night behind another big game from Mathurin (28 PTS, 16 REB). Things are good in Indianapolis!

March Madness: Round of 64 Update

  • After holding Clemson to just 13 points in the first half, Brandon Murray (21 PTS) and the 12th-seeded McNeese Cowboys grabbed the first big upset of the tournament by taking down the fifth-seeded Tigers 69-67. Weā€™re riding with Amir!

  • The West Region saw a few milder upsets last nightā€”10th-seeded Arkansas took down 7th-seeded Kansas 79-72, while the 11th-ranked Drake Bulldogs beat 6th-ranked Missouri 67-57. We canā€™t wait to find out who this yearā€™s Cinderella will beā€¦

  • In a matchup of 2025 NBA draft prospects, Egor Demin (15 PTS) and the 6th-ranked BYU Cougars put on a clinic to leap past 12th-ranked VCU, led by Max Shulga (12 PTS), for an 80-71 win over the Rams.

  • Khalif Battle, welcome to March! The Gonzaga guard had 24 points and sunk four threes to help the Bulldogs to a huge win overā€¦ well, the Bulldogs. Eighth-seeded Gonzaga took down ninth-ranked Georgia 89-68.

  • And finally, last nightā€™s 1st- and 2nd-seeded squads (Houston, Auburn, St. Johnā€™s, and Tennessee) all escaped their hopeful 15th- and 16th-seeded spoilers. Nothing insanely crazy on the chaos frontā€¦ so far.

Top Five Friday

Itā€™s March, and although we Enjoy the NBA, thereā€™s no doubt that college basketball runs this month. With that in mind, letā€™s take a look at five of the most intriguing, high-stakes Round of 64 matchups from the menā€™s tournament that weā€™re looking forward to today!

  1. (8) UConn vs. (9) Oklahoma - 9:25pm ET

These 8-9 matchups are always tough to predict, but we love this game specifically because of the storyline around the Huskies and HC Dan Hurley. After back-to-back elite seasons that were both capped by NCAA championships, UConn regressed a little this year and ended their 23-10 season with a semifinal loss in the Big East tournament. Can the Huskies ignore their seed, make a deep run, and keep the three-peat alive? Or will the Sooners, led by 2025 NBA lottery prospect Jeremiah Fears, play spoiler?

  1. (3) Kentucky vs. (14) Troy - 7:10pm ET

Kentucky has been victim to some brutal upsets over the past couple years, and this one could end similarly if senior Troy guard Tayton Conerway has anything to say about it. Conerway leads the Trojans in points (14.3) and assists (4.8) per game, and his 2.9 steals per game lead the entire Sun Belt Conference. Kentucky fans will have to hope that the trio of Otega Oweh, Jaxson Robinson, and Lamont Butler are at full force if they want to avoid repeating history.

  1. (5) Memphis vs. (12) Colorado State - 2:00pm ET

Of course we had to include another 5-12 matchup after what McNeese pulled off yesterday! PJ Haggerty and the Memphis Tigers are on upset alert today going up against 2025 NBA draft prospect Nique Clifford and the Colorado State Rams. Haggerty was the top per-game scorer in the American this year and Memphis forward Dain Dainja was about as efficient as they came in the conference, but donā€™t count out Clifford and the Rams!

  1. (8) Mississippi State vs. (9) Baylor - 12:15pm ET

This is another super close one thatā€™s gonna be tough to predict. Mississippi State is led by 5ā€™10ā€ sophomore guard Josh Hubbard, who averaged almost 19 points per game for the Bulldogs across a tough slate of SEC games. Meanwhile, Baylorā€™s 1-2 punch of senior forward Norchad Omier and top-five 2025 NBA draft prospect V.J. Edgecombe provides a lot of versatility for the Bears.

  1. (6) Ole Miss vs. (11) North Carolina - 4:05pm ET

Could this really happen? After basketball fansā€™ display of outrage upon UNCā€™s inclusion in this tournament, the Tar Heelsā€™ blowout of San Diego State on Tuesday proved that there might still be some life in this squad. RJ Davis, Ian Jackson, and Elliot Cadeau will hope to lead UNC to an upset win over Ole Miss, who is led in scoring by senior guard Sean Pedulla.
