Lakers survive Brunson’s heroics, win OT battle 113-109

If there's one rule of New York vs. LA sporting events, it's that they’ll always entertain.

But for most of the night, it seemed like Lakers-Knicks was going to be a relatively normal affair. The majority of the evening was spent in the depths of a gritty defensive-minded battle, with the Knicks maintaining a stable lead behind some tough Jalen Brunson (39 PTS, 10 AST) buckets and with Luka Doncic (32 PTS, 12 AST) and LeBron James (31 PTS, 12 REB) just out of reach.

But once crunch time hit, everything kicked into overdrive. Gabe Vincent (4 3PM) drilled some timely threes, LeBron hit a clutch pull-up, and Brunson answered right back with an unreal and-one to send it to OT.

In the extra frame, Luka took over early—highlighted by an absolutely disrespectful three over Karl-Anthony Towns—and LA never gave the lead back. Brunson suffered a late ankle tweak that might’ve changed the final moments, but even without it, this was the kind of bicoastal battle we’ll be talking about for a minute.

Harden goes full 2018, scores 50 in 123-115 Clippers win over Detroit

Slick step-backs for days? A classic nosebleed celly in front of Barack Obama? James Harden (50 PTS) had us feeling like it was 2018 again, and we couldn’t have been happier. Coming off six losses in their last seven games, the Clippers desperately needed this one in the crowded mess of the Western Conference playoff field, and The Beard stepped up with his best game in years.

The Clips needed every last one of those buckets, because Cade Cunningham (37 PTS, 10 AST) was locked in on the other end, going toe-to-toe with Harden for most of the night. But down the stretch, a couple timely Bogdan Bogdanovic (23 PTS) threes and just a little more Harden magic helped LA hold off the Pistons to secure a much-needed dub.

Elsewhere around the NBA…

  • Down 25-5 in the first quarter, the Warriors stormed back to beat the Nets 121-119 behind another audacious game from Steph Curry (40 PTS). They’re now 8-1 since trading for Jimmy Butler

  • Coby White (44 PTS) went for a career high against one of the toughest defenses in the league, scoring 14 points in the final six minutes to help the Bulls take down the Magic 125-123 in Orlando.

  • SGA (41 PTS) MVP campaign still rolling? You better believe it. Shai put on a masterclass in a clash between two of the West’s best, powering the Thunder to a comfortable 120-103 win over Memphis.

  • The pressure’s gone in Cleveland! The Cavs became the first team in the NBA to clinch a playoff spot, as Donovan Mitchell (26 PTS) led the charge in a 112-107 win over the Heat—that’s their 12th W in a row.

  • The top teams out East better check their rearview mirrors, because the Bucks are moving. Damian Lillard (34 PTS) and Giannis (32 PTS) recorded matching 30-pieces to give Milwaukee their eighth win of nine, this one a 137-107 blowout of the Mavericks.

  • Of all the legendary Celtics throughout history, who would’ve thought Derrick White (41 PTS) and Payton Pritchard (43 PTS) would be the first Boston duo to drop 40 in the same game? The two combined for 19 threes as the C’s pulled away from the Trail Blazers 128-118.

🧠 Daily Trivia 🧠

James Harden just became the 6th oldest player in NBA history to score 50. Which of these players is NOT ahead of him on that list?

Film Friday

Since the middle of January, only three teams in the NBA have more wins than the Portland Trail Blazers. And with the Suns sliding and the Mavericks all out of sorts, they could be on their way to their first taste of postseason basketball since the Dame era.

On this edition of Film Friday, let’s take a quick look at how they’ve managed such an incredible turnaround.

Toumani the Terrifying

This time last year, Toumani Camara’s name was little more than a whisper—a hard-nosed defensive wing quietly locking up stars in Portland. Fast forward to today, and those whispers have turned into a full-on symphony. Camara has officially arrived, as evidenced by a full breakdown from Thinking Basketball, a glowing write-up on Forbes, and the cherry on top: Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month.

With Camara at the helm, it’s no wonder that the Blazers’ recent surge has been largely due to their defensive work. Portland has been second in the NBA in defensive rating since January 19th and first in fast-break points allowed, in large part due to Toumani’s disruptive tendencies.

A Scoot in the Right Direction

Time to tap the “Give young guards time to grow” sign again! During his rookie year, Scoot Henderson was a bundle of limitless energy… that unfortunately didn’t seem to have an off switch. The Ignite product often barreled his way into tough situations without thinking about how to get out, and the result was a lot of rough turnovers.

But this year, Scoot has embraced his more cerebral side and clearly found his stride in the process. While his passing has taken a noticeable leap (he’s averaging nearly a turnover fewer per game without a drop in playmaking), it’s his ability to hit shots off the catch that’s really opened up his game. The young guard is burying nearly 39% of his catch-and-shoot attempts from deep, up a whopping 8% from last year.

Shaedon’s Scoring Chops

A silky smooth wing blessed with the vertical leap of an Olympic high jumper, Shaedon Sharpe is one of those guys who has star written all over him, even if the production on the court hasn’t quite caught up.

But after a brief stint in Chauncey Billups’ doghouse for lackluster defense, Shaedon took a page out of MJ’s book and took it personally. Since then, he’s put together one of the best stretches of his young career. The key? Finishing at the rim like a seasoned vet. Sharpe is converting over 75% of his shots at the basket, one of the best marks among wings this season. Combine that with his already smooth jumper, and the Blazers might already have the primary scoring option they’ve been looking for.

Three in the Key

ARE YOU SERIOUS STEPH??? 🤯
How are you even supposed to guard this?

Amen to that! 🙏
The Thompson twin throws it down with AUTHORITY!

Where is the bench? 😯
This really puts the Mavs’ injury woes into perspective…

What We’re Enjoying

Happy Birthday, Pierre! P’s birthday deserved something special, and what’s more special than a sit-down with the man who started it all? On the latest episode of T’d Up, Pierre’s dad Derrick Tyshon Breeland joined the pod to talk hoops, life, and everything in between. From the core basketball values that he passed down to P to the Numbers on the Board crew’s NBA player comps to how the league has evolved over the years, it’s a must-listen. 👀
