Game Recaps
KAT dominates, Brunson closes in 99-95 Battle of NY
Even when the Nets are in rebuild mode and the Knicks are East contenders, the battle for New York never disappoints. For a while, it looked like Karl-Anthony Towns (25 PTS, 16 REB) was going to power the Knicks to a routine W, but a flurry of points from the Nets bench (Tosan Evbuomwan and Tyrese Martin, anyone?) and some stout Brooklyn defense had us all flipping the game back on when the Nets took a surprise late lead.
But Jalen Brunson (18 PTS) wasn’t about to let the Knicks fold, as JB hit three straight clutch buckets to put New York back on top. Even a huge late three from D’Angelo Russell (23 PTS, 10 AST) to bring Brooklyn within two wasn’t enough, as the Knicks locked things down to escape with a gritty four-point W.
JALEN BRUNSON.
3 straight clutch buckets late. 🥶

Ausar, Cade power Pistons past Amen’s Rockets 107-96
The first Thompson Twin clash of 2025 didn’t disappoint. While Amen (17 PTS, 3 STL) dazzled with his playmaking and defensive energy, it was Ausar (11 PTS) and the Pistons who walked away with a win over the Rockets.
But don’t be mistaken: this game belonged to Cade Cunningham. In what’s becoming his signature move, Cade took over in the third quarter, pouring in 19 to break the game wide open. It wasn’t just finesse, though—the Pistons showed some real grit, winning the rebounding battle and making Houston pay for mistakes by forcing 17 turnovers of their own.

Elsewhere around the NBA…
Without a single starter playing more than 30 minutes, Jayson Tatum (22 PTS, 9 REB, 7 AST) and the Celtics handed the Warriors their worst home loss in 40 years, eventually pulling away for a whopping 125-85 W.
Good news for Daniel Gafford: he became the first player in Mavericks history to drop 30 PTS, 15 REB, and 5 BLK. Bad news for Daniel Gafford: LaMelo Ball (23 PTS, 9 AST) led the Hornets to their third straight win, a 110-105 W over Dallas.
It was a great night on Monday for Zach LaVine (35 PTS), who not only led Chicago to a 112-99 win over the Clippers, but also tied Bob Love for second-most 30-point games in Bulls franchise history. Only 428 more to pass Michael Jordan!
The evidence that CJ McCollum (45 PTS) is the greatest non-All-Star of all time just keeps piling up. He went absolutely bonkers for the Pelicans on Monday, carrying them to a 123-119 OT win over the Jazz.
Jaren Jackson Jr. (24 PTS) was the hero that Memphis needed on Monday, dropping 15 in the fourth quarter to lead the Grizzlies to a 108-106 comeback W against Anthony Edwards (32 PTS) and the Timberwolves.
The Nuggets’ machine keeps on rolling! Nikola Jokic (27 PTS, 13 REB, 10 AST) led an unstoppable offensive barrage as Denver ran riot over Philadelphia 144-109.
LeBron James’ legs haven't failed him yet! The King (21 PTS, 13 AST, 10 REB) rose up for a ferocious slam over Jonas Valanciunas (8 PTS, 7 REB) in the first half as the Lakers romped to a 111-88 win over the Wizards.
REAVES TO LEBRON FOR POSTER SLAM!!!! WOW 😱

Utah and Phoenix swap first-round picks
Four firsts moved and not a single player in sight? This is one of the more intriguing trades we’ve seen in a minute. Let’s break it down:
Jazz receive: Unprotected PHX 2031 first-round pick
Suns receive: Least favorable of CLE/MIN first-round picks in 2025 and CLE/MIN/UTA first-round picks in 2027 and 2029
Why the Jazz said yes: Danny Ainge strikes again! Timing is everything, and this trade feels like a masterclass in capitalizing on desperation. The Jazz added a potentially high-value unprotected pick from a Suns team that’s closer to the twilight of their contention window than its dawn. Plus, Utah still holds an absurd 11 first-rounders over the next seven years.
Why the Suns said yes: The Suns are laser-focused on making moves that maximize their title chances, and this trade gives them much-needed flexibility at the trade deadline. They can now package draft capital to offload Bradley Beal’s contract and still have the assets to swing big for a star—hello, Jimmy Butler! With KD and Booker in their primes, Phoenix is going all in, and it’s hard to blame them.

28.6%
…Malik Monk’s assist percentage since Doug Christie stepped in as Sacramento’s interim head coach, the highest on the team. Christie shook things up in a big way by putting the ball in Monk’s hands more often, and it’s been nothing short of a brilliant idea. Monk has unlocked some insane pick-and-roll synergy with Domantas Sabonis, creating one of the league’s most dynamic offensive duos. Add in the fact that Monk is still a sniper from deep, and it’s no wonder the Kings’ offense has looked downright unstoppable at times. 👑
No basket, but had to post this absolute dot from Monk. Cross-court laser right into the shooting pocket is nutty.

…Scoot Henderson’s points and assists averages over his last four games heading into last night—easily the best stretch of his young career. The 2023 third-overall pick is teaching us an important lesson about giving up on young guards too soon, especially ones that went toe-to-toe with Wemby less than three years ago. Scoot has finally found his groove, shooting 41.8% from deep over the past month while learning to slow the game down and make smarter reads. Case in point? A career-high 39-point explosion against the Nets. The future is bright in Portland. ☀️
The game has suddenly slowed dame for Scoot Henderson and this fast break illustrates that perfectly
Rather than running at 100 from jump, he hesitates slightly to freeze his defender, does a quick cross to gain leverage, the explodes towards the rim

…Mark Williams’ rebounds per game in 2025, the third-most in the Eastern Conference. Williams has struggled to stay on the court since getting drafted by the Hornets, but he’s been a menace in the new year. In games where he’s played more than 20 minutes, the Hornets big man is easily averaging career highs across the board while forming a lethal lob connection with LaMelo Ball. Charlotte may not be a playoff team this year, but LaMelo and Mark are starting to look like a duo you can build something special around. 💪
