Offseason Update

LeBron signs new contract with Lakers

All hail the King! After the Lakers drafted Bronny and LeBron opted out of his player option, the two sides agreed on a two year, $104 million contract on Wednesday despite LBJ’s reported willingness to take a pay cut so the Lakers could prioritize roster depth. This new contract includes a player option for the 2025-26 season and a full no-trade clause, so it’s fully in LeBron’s control how much longer he stays with his son in Los Angeles.

Wolves add Joe Ingles, PJ Dozier on one-year deals

After losing Kyle Anderson to the Golden State Warriors (more on them in a second, but we’re happy for him!), the Timberwolves tried to recoup that loss by bringing in two veteran role players. Joe Ingles, who played with Minnesota’s Rudy Gobert and Mike Conley in Utah, is a career 41% three-point shooter and will add some much-needed wing depth to Minnesota’s bench. And PJ Dozier, who spent last season with KK Partizan of the EuroLeague, is a six-year NBA vet who has a little experience in Minnesota itself as well—the Wolves signed him to an exhibit 10 deal a couple years back.

Warriors get Buddy Hield in sign-and-trade with Philly

You thought the Splash Brothers were done for good, didn’t you?!? Acquiring Buddy Hield doesn’t just mean two of the best three-point shooters in recent NBA history now play in the same uniform—Hield has developed into a much more multi-faceted weapon over the past few seasons. Now, will he be as successful next to Steph Curry as prime Klay was? No. But will this team be fun to watch? Absolutely.

Draft Review: Second Rounders

A week has gone by since the 2024 NBA Draft, and in retrospect we’re impressed by the number of big names and potentially instantly impactful prospects were taken during Thursday’s second round. Let’s go through some of our favorite sneaky picks:

🏀 🏀 🏀

Pelle Larsson ➡️ Heat (44th)

Nobody is better at finding and developing talent in the second round and the undrafted pool than the Heat, right? And in that case, who better to predict as a potential breakout candidate than Arizona wing Pelle Larsson. Larsson provides good size at his position (6’6”, 6’8” wingspan, 215 lbs) while also remaining mobile and active on the court. After shooting 43% from three last season with the Wildcats, Larsson could develop as either a catch-and-shoot threat or a secondary ball-handler and playmaker.

🏀 🏀 🏀

Antonio Reeves ➡️ Pelicans (47th)

If you want scoring at the college level, you can’t go wrong with what Antonio Reeves did at Kentucky. After all, averaging over 20 points on a roster that included Rob Dillingham, Reed Sheppard, and Tre Mitchell is no small feat! Reeves is a similar prospect to Jordan Hawkins, who the Pelicans drafted in the first round last year, but what makes Reeves unique is his ability to score in a wide variety of situations and produce at a volume not every college kid can. Next to Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and new addition Dejounte Murray, Reeves should thrive as an offense-first bench piece.

🏀 🏀 🏀

Tyler Kolek ➡️ Knicks (34th)

With a group of guards off the bench that includes Donte Divincenzo and Miles McBride, the Knicks’ backcourt rotation isn’t weak in the least. But especially given their loss of Alec Burks to the Heat, the Knicks will definitely benefit from Kolek’s catch-and-shoot ability and floor general attitude when he steps on the court at MSG.
