Summer League Recap

Sensabaugh sets SLC Summer League scoring record, Jazz win 112-111 thriller over Grizzlies

With the amount of offensive firepower we saw in this game, the nets were practically ocean-sized.

2023 draftees Brice Sensabaugh and GG Jackson II put on an absolute clinic in Salt Lake City on Monday night, as the two players and their teams gave us perhaps the best showing of Summer League so far. Sensabaugh put up 37 points on 9/14 shooting and 6/9 from three for the Jazz, while Jackson poured in 27 points of his own on 11/18 shooting for Memphis—not to mention two crazy blocks.

It wasn’t just the guys with prior NBA experience who balled out in this one—fifth overall pick Ace Bailey was seemingly everywhere on the court, dropping 18 points with a barrage of dunks and threes throughout the game. And with Utah leading 112-109 with under five seconds to go, Memphis’ Jackson hit an insane running shot off the glass that was ruled a two-pointer instead of a three, giving the Jazz the one-point victory.

Cam Spencer and Jaylen Wells added 23 points apiece for the Grizzlies, with Spencer torching the nets to the tune of a 7/10 mark from three. If the rest of Summer League gives us games as good as this one, we’re in for a real summer treat! 🍦

Balanced scoring attack lifts Miami to 93-79 win over Warriors

The summer Heat is in full effect! Miami improved to 2-1 at the SLC Summer League after walking away with a comfortable double-digit victory over the Warriors last night.

Seemingly everybody ate for the Heat against Golden State, with five players finishing in double figures. Kira Lewis Jr. led the charge, putting up 16 PTS on an effortless 7/10 shooting and 2/3 from distance, while Pelle Larsson and Kasparas Jakucionis poured in 15 PTS each. Undrafted rookie out of Michigan Vladislav Goldin was nothing but a positive for his squad, ending as a +28 in just 20 minutes!

Golden State hung around in the first quarter, but a 25-14 second quarter run from the Heat propelled Miami the rest of the way. Jackson Rowe led the way for the Dubs with 14 points and undrafted prospect Coleman Hawkins continued to show flashes, adding 9 points, dropping 4 dimes, and ending the game as a +8!

🔁 Norman Powell to Miami, John Collins to Clippers in three-team deal

Keep the offseason trades coming! A three-team, cross-conference deal hit our notifications this week, sending Norman Powell to the Heat, John Collins to the Clippers, and Kevin Love, Kyle Anderson, and a 2027 Clippers second-round pick to the Jazz, per Shams.

After his breakout season with the Clips, throughout which he received some Most Improved Player buzz, Powell will hopefully bolster Miami’s backcourt scoring punch. Meanwhile, Collins will get a fresh start on a playoff contender in LA after spending two seasons on a mostly tanking Jazz squad.

This move fills a huge hole at power forward for the Clippers, and we’re certainly going to be enjoying all of the James Harden/John Collins alley-oops off the pick-and-roll this season! 🔥

💰 Magic sign Paolo to 5yr, $239M max rookie extension

After acquiring Desmond Bane from Memphis last month, the Magic are making noise once again this offseason, inking their franchise cornerstone Paolo Banchero to a five-year max contract extension. The deal is currently worth $239 million, but that figure could reach up to $287 million (per Shams) if Banchero becomes eligible for a supermax deal. Get that bag, Paolo!

P5 has definitely lived up to the expectations scouts had for him after being drafted by the Magic first overall in 2022. He’s been the catalyst in leading his squad to the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, and with the East wide open this season, Orlando is locking down their core talent and making it known they’re looking to take advantage of their upcoming championship window.

With Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs also under contract for the next five seasons, the Magic are poised and ready to compete in the thick of the Eastern Conference. Great to see the young guys getting their hard-earned dough!

🥲 Chris Paul hints at retirement after 2025-26 season

One of the greatest PGs the game has ever seen may be hanging up his shoes after this upcoming season.

In a recent interview, Chris Paul said he has “at most a year” left in his NBA playing career. CP3 is entering his 21st season in the league, as he became just the 11th player in NBA history to reach the 20+ season mark last year.

Not sure if we’re ready for a CP3 retirement tour just yet! 😭
