Weekend Wrap-Up

Magic hold Heat to 8 PTS in the 4th quarter, complete 25-point comeback for 121-114 win

The battle for Florida was as hot as could be on Saturday night, but it was Orlando ultimately catching fire late for one of the most exciting wins of the season. Led by 35 PTS off the bench from Cole Anthony—27 of which came in the second half—the Magic tied their largest comeback in franchise history by erasing a 25-point deficit and beating the Heat, even without starting PG Jalen Suggs. That included a 22-point fourth quarter comeback, in which Orlando iced out Miami to the tune of just 8 PTS. That’s a dominant defensive display for one of the league’s stingiest teams.

The Heat, for their part, got 22+ PTS from all three of Terry Rozier, Bam Adebayo, and Tyler Herro, but the absence of Jimmy Butler combined with a cold stretch of shooting (1/15 from three) was enough for Orlando to mount a comeback. Outside of Anthony’s excellence, the Magic were aided by an 18-point, 13-rebound double-double from Goga Bitadze, who is having the best season of his six-year career. With a Paolo Banchero return on the horizon, the league should be wary of Orlando…

Wemby’s 30 PTS, 10 BLK lead Spurs to 114-94 win over Blazers

Is it a question of if Victor Wembanyama will record a quadruple-double, or when?

Those are the questions Wemby has everyone asking after performances like Friday’s, when he recorded 30 PTS and 10 BLK to help San Antonio to their fourth win in five games… even while sitting for most of the 4th quarter. His 10 swats tied a career-high and made him the first player in league history to record multiple 10-block games before turning 21. For Portland, Shaedon Sharpe dropped 25 PTS on a solid 69% shooting clip, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Alien.

Earlier this season, some had understandable concerns about how Wemby was developing offensively. He’s been a dominant defender since his first game in the league, but it’s tough to project how a player like him will grow when we’ve never seen a player like him before. Now, Wemby is answering the call—averaging 29 PPG in his last five games and guiding the Spurs into the play-in picture, Wembanyama’s future looks brighter than ever. Sorry, opposing shot-attempters!

Elsewhere around the NBA…

  • The Rockets are taking off in a major way this season, and they have plenty of different ways to win. Houston got past Toronto 114-110 on Sunday night despite a down game from Fred VanVleet. Dillon Brooks and Jalen Green combined for 49 PTS to overcome a career-high 27 from Ja’Kobe Walter.

  • When it comes to the Lakers, what goes down must come back up again. After falling to 12-11 a few weeks ago, L.A. has won four of their last five to reclaim a top five spot in the West, most recently skating past Sacramento 103-99. LeBron James, amid perhaps the first “trade rumors” of his career, stuffed the stat sheet with 32 PTS, 7 REB, 6 AST, and 4 STL.

  • With Christmas right around the corner, a few players gifted their teams big scoring performances—some in wins, and some in losses. Jayson Tatum’s 43 PTS helped Boston past Chicago, KD’s 43 PTS fell just short in Phoenix’s loss to Detroit, and Jalen Brunson dropped 39 PTS to lead New York past New Orleans. So many stars, so little time!

Stock Market 📈

In this week’s edition of the NBA Stock Market, let’s check in on the wide world of fantasy hoops.

Tyrese Maxey 📈

Maxey has been on an upward trajectory his entire career, and this season is no different. Philadelphia’s PG is top 15 in PPG and slowly improving his 3P% back to his career average. With injuries to a few other starting PGs complicating the position and some of the Sixers’ own stars banged up, don’t be afraid to lean on Rese!

🏀 🏀 🏀

Trey Murphy 📈

Trey Murphy has been a bucket-getter since he entered the league, but this season could present the greatest level of opportunity he’s seen in his career. Despite being rostered in just over half of ESPN leagues, Murphy has averaged 19.2 PPG this season and 21.2 over his last five games. With Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson potentially on the move at the deadline, scoop Murphy while you still can.

Christmas Ballers 📈

The league is on a unique schedule this week with Tuesday off, meaning the value of these Christmas Day games is even higher. If you’re looking for streaming options in your league, try to target players from the Christmas slate—specifically the games with higher projected totals like Lakers-Warriors and Nuggets-Suns (get Jonathan Kuminga if he’s still availble). Happy hooping! 😎
