🏀 One Streak Ends, Another Rumbles On

Plus, you build championship teams

When an NBA slate is as spectacular as it was this weekend, we feel conflicted. On the bright side, we get to watch great basketball—duh. So what could the downside possibly be? Well, how on Earth are we supposed to summarize each game in just a few sentences? They each deserve whole newsletters!

Alas, we don’t want to keep you here for six hours, so we’ll make it concise. Let’s get to it.

Today’s Lineup

Milwaukee is Mortal: Harden, 76ers snap Bucks’ win streak at 16 games 🛑

High IQ: Knicks win their ninth in a row thanks to Quickley’s 38 points 🧠

EB Roundtable: Are the teams you created winning any NBA championships? 🤔

The longest win streak in Knicks history was 18 games, in 1969-70. Who was the leading scorer on that team?

Friday’s Fun / Saturday’s Slate

Julius Randle scored 43 and hit a classic “NO, NO, NO… Yes!” shot to sink Miami and keep the Knicks vibe train rolling. Early returns on the Kevin Durant trade look promising for both Phoenix, who has comfortably won their first two games with KD, and Brooklyn, who stormed back from down 28 against Boston because of another Mikal Bridges clinic (38 points).

Saturday was highlighted by something we didn’t think we’d ever see again… a Bucks loss. The Sixers Big 3 all showed up in the primetime matchup, and the superstars finished the job. What a win for Philly. What’s that you hear? Uh-oh… Play. The. Song.

The Western Conference is WILD. A team can be struggling just to stay above water, but then they’ll win a few games in a row and suddenly be tied for sixth place… oh, hi Minnesota! A big Wolves win in Sacramento on Saturday vaulted them up the West standings. Anthony Edwards has been phenomenal this season—just look at the names on this list. 😮‍💨

Sunday’s Best

Want to dive deeper into the stats? Here are Sunday’s box scores.

Suns top Mavericks 130-126 to kick off Sunday’s slate of games

Is there any better feeling than a superstar matchup living up to the hype? Kevin Durant (37 points, 12/17 FG) and Devin Booker (36 points and 10 assists) have meshed quickly, as Phoenix (36-29) is 3-0 since the blockbuster deal. Dallas (33-32) got 30+ from both Luka and Kyrie, but they’re still having a tough time finishing games.

The Suns are laughably good. Well, unless you’re any other team in the West, in which case you’re probably like…

Tyrese Haliburton clutches up as Pacers beat Bulls, 125-122

The calendar says March, so it seems fair to say this: Tyrese Haliburton… ONIONS! The Iowa State product hit a deep game-winning three with 2.7 seconds left as Indiana (29-36) held off a massive Zach LaVine performance and beat Chicago (29-36) in an important game for the Eastern Conference play-in race.

Lakers spoil Steph’s return, defeat Warriors 113-105

Steph Curry (27 points) shook off some rust in his first game since February 4th, but Anthony Davis (39/8/6) stole the show as Los Angeles (31-34) downed Golden State (34-31). LA is looking to stay within striking distance of the play-in without LeBron James 👀.

Bridges balls again as Nets handle Hornets 102-86

Mikal Bridges definitely looks the part of a franchise player. He put up 30+ for the fourth time since joining Brooklyn (36-28), en route to the Nets blowing out Charlotte (20-46). Only 16 games left, Hornets fans… although you’ll have to wait another 108 days before the draft.

Lillard continues outrageous run as Blazers beat Magic 122-119

Portland being 30-34 will prevent Damian Lillard (41 points) from getting any MVP love, but that man has been in another stratosphere of hoops over the past few months. He led the Blazers to a victory against Orlando (27-38) last night, who had 26 from Paolo Banchero.

Shai shines in return, Thunder beat Jazz 129-119

Bucket getters get buckets. This ain’t rocket science! SGA (38 points) returned to OKC’s (30-34) lineup and helped the Thunder beat Utah (31-34) in a game that will mean a lot for the play-in race—that feels like something we’ll be saying a lot in the coming weeks. A Jalen Williams career-high helped as well.

A Giannis triple-double (we think?) helps Bucks beat Wizards 117-111

If you hate “stat-padding”, stop reading IMMEDIATELY. Giannis Antetokounmpo was one rebound away from his fourth triple-double of the season as the clock was winding down on Milwaukee’s (46-18) victory over the Wizards (30-34), so he did… this. What do we think, Enjoyers? Is that a real rebound?

Rockets beat Spurs 142-110 in a basketball game

This was definitely a basketball game that happened on March 5th, 2023 between the Houston Rockets (15-49) and the San Antonio Spurs (16-49). Jalen Green scored 31 for Houston. He also had this cool assist!

Knicks keep streaking after winning instant classic against Celtics, 131-129

Can you name a team that has been more fun in a shorter span than the New York Knicks (39-27)? Nope, you can’t!

Jalen Brunson didn’t play. New York was at Boston (45-20). A Celtics blow-out wasn’t out of the realm of possibility. Instead, the Knicks got 38 from Immanuel Quickley and won their ninth straight. Go New York go, we guess!

Clippers use furious fourth quarter rally to stun Grizzlies 135-129

The last game of the day being just as good as the first game of the day is such a satisfying feeling, isn’t it? Down 15 in the fourth, it looked like Los Angeles (34-33) was about to go under .500 and suffer perhaps their worst loss of the year to a depleted Memphis (38-25) squad. Then, Paul George (42 points) remembered who he is and LA stormed all the way back.

They say a hungry dog runs faster. If that’s true, then the Clips looked like this in the fourth quarter:

What a day, huh?

Bucks Get Dragic, Chaos In Memphis

  • After he was bought out by the Chicago Bulls, veteran point guard Goran Dragic will sign with the Bucks for the remainder of this season. Can the 36 year-old give Milwaukee some spot minutes in a playoff run?

  • It was a tough off-the-court weekend for the Memphis Grizzlies. Brandon Clarke is due to miss the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles, Dillon Brooks was suspended a game for picking up his 16th (!!!) technical foul, and Ja Morant was suspended for at least two games after going live on Instagram and appearing to show a firearm while at a nightclub.

EB Roundtable

On today’s EB Roundtable, we asked you all to embrace your inner GM and build a championship squad (with a few stipulations).

We got a TON of responses, but here are three of our favorites for their creativity and skill. Let's dive in. 👇

Props to you Quantavious, because you know how to build a SQUAD. Steph could make full use of his off-ball skills with first-class service from Jokic. Mobley is there to shore up any defensive deficiencies, while Franz Wagner and Bennedict Mathurin serve as dangerous extra scoring options. There's some serious title potential with this team.

Fresh off that game-winning dagger last night, Tyrese Haliburton leads this group that takes a more realistic approach to the prompt. Hali and Josh Giddey dropping dimes left and right, J-Dub doing a little bit of everything at the three, and the Bam-Mobley combo forming the best defensive frontcourt in basketball? Sign us up.

James clearly knows a thing or two about the pick-and-roll, because Giannis and the Point God seem like a practically unguardable combination. And with plenty of spacing from Jalen Green, AJ Griffin, and Franz Wagner, this team could run with anybody. 🏃‍♂️

Frozen Moments

  • Anthony Edwards after hitting a clutch shot with under a minute left: “Wanna see me do it again?”

  • De’Aaron Fox: Still HIM.

  • Slowly but surely, Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga is blossoming
