NBA Finals Recap

Spurs keep series hope alive, cut Knicks series lead to 2-1 in 115-111 win at MSG

A common theme for the Spurs this postseason has been their strong ability to bounce back with their backs against the wall. Their big road win on Monday to keep their series and title hopes alive was just further proof of their resilience.

Game three followed a similar script to games one and two, with the Spurs jumping out to a double-digit lead early on, leading 33-22 after the first quarter. The Knicks came out with an all-out blitz to close the first half though, with some big time triples from Josh Hart (16 PTS, 4/7 3PT) and OG Anunoby (28 PTS, 9/13 FG) that turned an 11 point deficit into a seven point halftime cushion for New York.

For Wemby and the Spurs, this was their make-or-break moment. Either they fold, go down 3-0, thus unofficially ending the series, or they can respond and give themselves a shot to get back in this thing. And as they have all playoffs, they chose to respond.

Wemby put up a stellar performance (32 PTS, 8 REB, 6 AST, 3 BLK) and was able to silence the hostile MSG crowd under immense pressure. Performances like this one, on the road, while on the biggest stage in all of basketball makes it easy to forget he’s still just 22 years old…

Speaking of youth, Stephon Castle (23 PTS, 8/14 FG) was fantastic in this one, getting to rim at will and hitting some major clutch buckets that sealed NYK’s fate.

The young stars certainly lived up to their ‘Area 51’ Nickname in the win: 🔥

With the Spurs taking the first step in getting back in this series, game four becomes a massive one on both sides. The Knicks can redeem themselves and take a 3-1 lead, while the Spurs can do something only a handful of teams throughout playoff history have done- win two road games after losing two home games to open a series. 😳

Buckle up, Enjoyers…game four is going to be SPECIAL.

Dream continue hot start to season, defeat Sky 82-75 in Angel Reese’s return to Chicago

We’re just 11 games into the WNBA season, but as of right now, the Chicago Sky’s decision to trade for Angel Reese this past offseason has looked like a home run.

Angel always plays with incredible effort, but last night’s game against her former team felt a little different than usual. She was COOKING on all fronts in the W, going for a crazy double-double of 17 points and 17 rebounds, along with four dimes and two blocks to sweeten the deal. 😎

ATL was trailing by one entering the fourth quarter, but a lockdown 25-17 final period gave the Dream the road win, notching their eighth win in the first 11 games of the season. It wasn’t just Reese who carried the load offensively, either. All five Dream starters scored 14+ points, including All-Star Rhyne Howard (17 PTS, 5 AST, 3 STL) and Naz Hillman (16 PTS, 3/8 3PT). Everybody eats!

For the Sky, it was a rough night from the floor. Skylar Diggins shot just 5/15 from the field, and couldn’t find a way to withstand the Dream’s big fourth quarter. With the loss, Chicago falls to 4-8 on the season…

It’s a new era in Atlanta, and it looks like it’s only just beginning!

On This Day: NBA Playoff History

June 10th, 2016: Warriors defeat Cavs 108-97 in game four of the 2016 Finals, sets up eventual Cavs 3-1 series comeback

Ten years ago today, the Golden State Warriors took a 3-1 lead in the 2016 NBA Finals. Nobody knew it at the time, but this would be the Warriors final win of the series.

As a result of the Cavs historic 3-1 comeback, this game four often gets lost in the shadows. Let’s take a rewind at the game that many skip past when thinking back to this legendary Finals: 🔥

The first three games of the 2016 Finals followed a specific pattern: blowout, blowout, blowout. GSW demolished Cleveland in the opening two games of this Finals rematch from a season prior, while the Cavs responded with a big game three win to avoid a 0-3 deficit, thus setting the NBA world up for an electric game four. Either LeBron, Kyrie Irving, and the Cavs tie the series at two games a piece, or Steph Curry and the 73-9 Warriors take a commanding 3-1 lead.

Steph was hardly himself throughout the first three games, but game four was a staple 2016 Curry game. He exploded for 38 points on seven made triples, silencing many of his critics with dagger after dagger from behind the arc.

His splash brother Klay Thompson poured in 25 points of his own, and a 29-20 fourth quarter led GSW to the W, and were on the cusp of completing their historic 73-9 season with a championship.

Kyrie (34 PTS, 14/28 FG) and LeBron (25 PTS, 13 REB, 9 AST) kept the Cavs above water, but the Warriors were just simply better. This series felt done, because history told us it was. No team in NBA Finals history had ever come back from a 3-1 deficit. The Warriors were destined to repeat as champions. It was over.

Or so we thought…
