Super South Sudan

When South Sudan was announced to be in the same group as Team USA for the upcoming Paris Olympics, many declared it the largest mismatch in international basketball history. But in the squads’ exhibition matchup this weekend, the world’s youngest nation had other plans.

On Saturday, the South Sudanese National Team nearly pulled off a stunning upset over Team USA, going up by as many as 16 points but ultimately falling 101-100 after being 40+ point underdogs. Former Sixer Marial Shayok led the way with 24 PTS for a South Sudan squad that features a deceivingly large amount of former NBA talent, but it wasn’t enough against the basketball Avengers—namely LeBron James, who notched 23 PTS and the game-winning layup.

Even if you’re rooting for Team USA, South Sudan’s journey is as inspirational as it gets! Listen to center/forward Wenyen Gabriel talk about his squad’s journey:

Very Cavalier!

The latest in the line of young studs to get their bag, Evan Mobley recently inked a new 5-year, $224 million extension to stay in Cleveland for the long haul. The deal comes after the Cavs had already locked up Donovan Mitchell earlier in the summer, adding security to Cleveland’s core for years to come.

One of the league’s most impactful defenders since being drafted third overall out of USC in 2021, Mobley has more than earned this cash. He was a strong contender for DPOY in 2023 and averaged 21 PPG in this year’s East semis against Boston—the Cavs got a good one! 🔒

Summer Standouts

You might have to go to summer school if you fail your classes, but these hoopers are balling in the hopes they make the grade. Let’s check in with some of the players making names for themselves in the 2024 NBA Summer League:

Matas Buzelis, CHI

The kid from Chicago is winning the hearts of NBA fans everywhere with his chill demeanor, hometown threads, and cold-blooded dominance on the court. With games of 28 and 18 PTS and an clear sense of comfort handling the ball and creating for himself, Buzelis could be a difference-maker early in his NBA career. Oh, and don’t forget this sweet slam!

Ricky Council IV, PHI

While his friends might call him Ricky Bounce-il for his insane hops, the young Philly guard has more in his repertoire than high flying dunks. He averaged 18.8 PPG over four games in Vegas and showed a knack for getting downhill and finishing tough looks at the cup. Rotation him 🔜 !

Neemias Queta, BOS

This one is for all the two-way Summer Leaguers! After earning a championship as a part of Boston’s recent title roster, Queta is out to make a name of his own with back-to-back 20-point games and overall dominance on the glass. The recent draft picks always steal most of the shine during the summer, but don’t forget about the guys still trying to carve out their place in the league!

What We’re Enjoying

There’s never a bad time to listen to great music, and Mac Miller’s 2018 album Swimming certainly fits that bill. There are songs to groove to, songs to contemplate to, and everything in between—our favorite track has to be the iconic “2009”, but it’s hard to pick just one. RIP Mac! 🩷
